Sunderland’s Bent admits to ‘beach ball’ goal being most bizarre he has scored

Sunderland striker Darren Bent admitted his gaol that deflected of a beach ball against Liverpool was the most bizarre he has ever scored.

The former Tottenham talisman pulled the trigger in the fifth minute of the match at the Stadium of Light on Saturday to see his shot hit a beach ball sitting in the middle of the area and ricochet past Reds keeper Pepe Reina who seemed to have got himself in the right spot to stop his initial shot.

Unfortunately for Liverpool fans, the goal stood and in the end was the difference between the sides but Bent said it doesn’t matter how you score them if they win you matches.

"It was the most bizarre goal I have ever scored, but we will take the victory,” Bent said.

“Reid crossed it from the right, it fell to me, I took a shot and it hit the balloon and went into the corner. Someone said after the game that it should have been a drop ball or something!

“You just have to smile and move on to the next game. As soon as the ball went into the net I just ran off to celebrate and I wasn’t aware of anything else that was going on. I just thought it was another goal and hopefully another victory for Sunderland.
“It wasn’t deliberate. I wasn’t aiming for it! I hadn’t see the balloon beforehand, it was quite large and in the middle of their penalty area, so they should have done something about it. It had a Liverpool badge on it. It came from their fans, but it was just a goal and we move on.

“Five minutes after the goal there was a pause in the game, I was chatting with Glen Johnson, he said that he tried to clear it, but the ball was in the way. I just had a smile on my face, he wasn’t happy!”
