St Mirren boss frustrated at failure to defeat Rangers

St Mirren boss Gus MacPherson admitted the Buddies' dressing room was "sombre" after losing 1-0 to nine-man Rangers in the Co-operative Insurance Cup final.

"It is extremely sore to take having being in control for the large percentage of the game.

"People will talk about Rangers going down to nine men but even with a full complement we were the better team.

"We created more chances when it was 11 versus 11.

"We had chances that we have to take but that has been a frustration for us for most of the season.

"But the players were outstanding and I am proud of them after putting so much in to it."

MacPherson will now turn his attention to remaining in the SPL.

St Mirren are second bottom of the table, but the Buddies' boss is confident his players will recover to climb away from the relegation spot.

"They will get over it," he said.

"Professional sport is how you deal with disappointment and go again and there is no question that they will get over this.

"It could make them stronger, it could drive them on to have more success in their careers.

"We have massive games coming up in the SPL and that is now where the attention turns.

"If they play with that commitment, we have got to be confident that we can get results in the remaining SPL games."
