Southampton go for ex-Villa striker Vassell

Ambitious Southampton are moving for former Manchester City and Aston Villa striker Darius Vassell.

Ambitious Southampton are moving for former Manchester City and Aston Villa striker Darius Vassell.

The Mirror says Southampton manager Alan Pardew is looking for another striker to boost his squad after Saints were installed as red-hot favourites to win League One.

Vassell, capped 22 times by England, was mobbed by 3,000 ecstatic fans when he first arrived at Ankaragucu from Manchester City a year ago but he managed only four goals in 24 matches.

Pardew wants Vassell to compete with leading scorer Rickie Lambert and Lee Barnard for a place in Southampton’s attack which last season scored more than 100 goals in all competitions.
