Sydney’s bid for a second A-League club is the frontrunner to win the 12th licence to enter the competition.

The bid, headed by property developer Joe Meissner, has emerged as the favourite to be granted entry to the A-League with the decision to be made by Football Federation Australia later this month or in August.

Former National Soccer League great Berti Mariani, who is involved in the bid and will most likely become CEO of the new club, said a second side in Sydney would be great for the game.

“We have a vision and it’s a pretty wide one,” he said.

“We see ourselves as being supplementary to what Sydney FC have been doing for five years and I feel we would complement each other.

“We feel we have followed the process and protocols as best we can and financially we are looking sound. We have the financial base we need.

“I can’t say whether the other bids are at but I am confident we have fulfilled the criteria, though of course the FFA will be the final arbiter of that.”
