Seattle Sounders’ Keller agrees with new DP rule

Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller believes the new Designated Player ruling will increase the profile of MLS.

Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller believes the new Designated Player ruling will increase the profile of MLS.

The former Tottenham and Fulham shot-stopper says that bringing in high quality and big-name players can only be good for the sport in the USA but only if it is done the right way.

"I think it helps. It's a profile thing. The best thing that (David) Beckham has done was to get everyone around the world know what MLS is,” he said in an interview with the Seattle Times.

“Have the attendances gone through the roof? No, not really. But there is a little bit awareness around the world, which is a great thing. Hopefully it gets better and better.

“I think it's good if it's done in the right ways,” he added.

“I think you got to have guys that want to be here, but at the same time, I hate to see situations where you put all your eggs in one or two baskets and not have the rest of guys treated the way they should be. Because it is a team sport. It's great to have one or two guys that can truly raise your level and raise your profile, but not at the expense of 22-23 others. If it's done the right way then I think it can be a very positive thing for the sport."
