Real Madrid president Florentino wants Liverpool boss Benitez
Sport says Real president Florentino Perez has lost confidence in coach Manuel Pellegrini after their Champions League defeat to Lyon and is now focusing on finding a replacement for next season.
Indeed, plans for new player signings have been put on the backburner for general manager Jorge Valdano, with Perez insisting they must sort out their coaching position.
Benitez was contacted immediately after Real's Copa humiliation at Alcorcon earlier this season and now the communication line has reopened after the manner of defeat in Lyon.
Perez is a fan of Benitez's man-management and despite having over four years left on his contract, Real know they have the spending power to bring the Spaniard back to his old club in the summer.
