Real Madrid dumped out of Champions League by Lyon

Lyon have caused the upset of this year’s Champions League by knocking nine-time winners Real Madrid out of the competition.

Following the first leg which Lyon won 1-0 at home, it seemed the Spaniards would push through to the quarter-finals for the first time in six seasons when Cristiano Ronaldo netted in just the sixth minute of the clash at Santiago Bernabeu.

But the determined French outfit fought back to grab an equaliser on the night through Miralem Panjic in the75th minute and force themselves 2-1 up on aggregate.

Lyon held out Madrid for the final 15 minutes and booked their spot in the final eight, sending Manuel Pellegrini’s men to focus on the remainder of their domestic season.
