AS Roma were uninspiring in their 0-0 draw with Cesena to kickoff the new Serie A season.

Roma coach Claudio Ranieri admitted his players lacked focus throughout the 90 minutes.

"We were a little too slapdash, as we were unable to repeat the fine performance of the Italian Super Cup with its timing and movement,” he said of that 3-1 defeat to Inter last week.

“Because of that, we kept giving Cesena the opportunity to get back and pack the midfield, so it became even more difficult to find space.”

Jeremy Menez and Mirko Vucinic were criticised for their performances for being all style and no substance.

“Let’s not pin everything on them after one match. Clearly they are quality players and so when they’re on form, the whole team improves, but tonight they did what they could.

“In a way we should be happy with this point, as Cesena had dangerous chances too and were well-organised.

“It wasn’t the debut we were dreaming of, as we wanted to win and get off to a strong start. Perhaps it was that desire to over-do it that stopped us from putting the right final ball in.”
