Perth Glory’s Fowler surprised ex-Liverpool boss Houllier has returned

Perth Glory striker Robbie Fowler says he is surprised that his former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has returned to management.

The Frenchman, who coached Fowler during his last days at Anfield, has been appointed as the new boss at Aston Villa and the ex-England international admits it was a bit of a shock to see him take a new job after seemingly having a comfortable position with France’s Football Federation.

“I'm surprised he has decided to come back, because he seemed to be enjoying his technical work, and it is certainly a tough job," Fowler said.

"They have lost players from last season when they did well, and they have lost a charismatic manager (in Martin O’Neill). They also seem to be looking to cut back, so I don't suppose there will be a lot of money to spend.
"That makes it very hard to finish higher than they have for the past couple of seasons, and in that sense, it's a very difficult job.

"But Gerard is a very experienced manager with a great track record, and he will believe he can still perform well there. We may have had our differences but I still wish him well. I always want anyone with connections to Liverpool to do well."
