North Queensland Fury’s Downey: Fowler has a real aura

North Queensland Fury winger Jimmy Downey has revealed that his teammate, ex-Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, has a real aura about him.

Downey crossed to the Fury from Perth Glory in mid-January this year and was excited about the prospect of playing alongside a living football legend when he arrived – and the experience did not let him down.

“Robbie Fowler was awesome to play with – he is unbelievable, he has this aura about him,” he told The Gympie Times.

“I was intimidated by him the whole time, but he is the nicest guy.

“He is a real joker, but you can’t stitch him up because you know he will just get you back even better.”

Downey made the switch to Townsville as he felt his career was going nowhere with the Glory, mainly due to injuries, but also admitted he was unsure of what his future held for him.

“I felt like, after all my injuries, I had to start again and a change of scenery was good for that,” Downey added.

“I have been back in Perth for about two weeks and my agent has been doing a lot of work for me.

“I’m contracted until March 31st with the Fury, which doesn’t really leave me much time to sign with a club.

“I should know within the next month, if not sooner, where I will be playing next season.

“My agent is talking to a lot of clubs but there has been nothing concrete.

“I’m not worried about it, though. I won’t just take the first offer that comes, I’ll wait and see what is out there.

“I have thought about maybe going into Europe or Asia,” the 22-year old added further.

“But I wouldn’t go unless there was a good offer at a club that wants me to play.

“I don’t really know where I will end up, but I am confident I will get something soon.”
