Seeing results may help us – Wellington’s Ifill
Wellington Phoenix striker Paul Ifill admits being able to see some of the results pan out before their vital clash with Gold Coast United may work in the teams favour.
The New Zealand club are on the verge of making their first finals series in the A-League but may need results to go their way if they are to secure their berth this weekend.
The ‘Nix currently sit in fifth position on the table on 34 points, equal with sixth-placed Newcastle Jets and are four in front of top six contenders Brisbane Roar and five ahead of North Queensland Fury who are still a mathematical chance.
Ifill said it may be a good thing that the players get to see what happens in the Fury versus Melbourne Victory, the Adelaide United versus Roar and the Central Coast Mariners versus Jets matches on Friday and Saturday as it may take some pressure off or put extra pressure on ahead of their away fixture with third-placed United.
“You can't help [watching]. I don't know which way is best. Sometimes it's best to get it out the way and get your three points and sit back and watch the rest of the results," admitted Ifill.
"We've got to go last and sometimes that can help and sometimes that can hinder because it could put extra pressure on us if the other teams around us get results.
"If they don't it takes the pressure off and we can go into the game knowing that we're in there and it might make us play a little bit better."
Ifill said the Phoenix were confident going into the match against Gold Coast as they have achieved two good results in the past, including a 6-0 demolition, but understands their opponents have put together a good run in recent weeks.
"We've had a couple of decent results against them in the past but I think it's going to be a different game," he added.
"They are in a different position to what they were last time, as are we. I think they will be pretty confident going into the game with the run they've been on."
