Why let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Truth was Real Madrid were playing a game of brinkmanship and didn't realise that the english deadline closed 5 hours before theirs.
Still a where's the sheik story sounds better doesn't it.

Its pretty obvious Real didn't want to let Gago go, and delayed it so they could keep him in their squad. Now they have a player who doesn't really want to be there.
