Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill is being tracked by Manchester United.
The Telegraph says United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants to sign a young centre-half next summer.
United spent a season assessing the qualities of Antonio Valencia last term before completing an £18m move for Wigan midfielder.
And he has instructed his scouting network to monitor the progress of Palermo defender Simon Kjaer and Bolton centre-half Cahill.
