Olympiakos miss out on chance to ensure round of 16 status
Submitted by Andrew Slevison on Tue, 11/24/2009 - 23:53
Greek club Olympiakos have missed an opportunity to book their place in the round of 16 in the European Champions League.
A 0-0 draw with Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar on Tuesday night put Olympiakos three points clear in second place on the Group H table but they have to take on group leaders Arsenal in their final match.
Third-placed Standard Liege, who lost to Arsenal 2-0, need a win against the eliminated Alkmaar in the final group stage fixture to go through provided Arsenal get the points against Olympiakos.
A draw at home will be enough for the Greeks to get through but if they lose they will have to rely on Alkmaar holding Liege to a draw or beating them on Wednesday December 8.
