Liverpool’s Benitez: We deserved to win, penalty or not
Under-fire Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez can count his lucky stars that his side was awarded a penalty to record a 2-2 draw against Birmingham at Anfield on Monday night.
That being the case, the Spaniard believes his side deserved to win the game as they had more possession and created many more chances than their opponents although the visitors would beg to differ.
Benitez was unsure whether or not the penalty awarded to Reds striker David Ngog with about 20 minutes remaining should have been paid but was surprised his team did not score more goals and win the game comfortably.
"We had so many chances and plenty of possessions, at the end we can talk about the penalty - whether it was or was not - but we deserved to win because we had so many opportunities," said Benitez.
"I was talking to him (Ngog) and he said maybe it wasn't a penalty but it was 74 per cent possession again in the first half and it is unbelievable.
"I was really surprised, we had clear chances and we were attacking all the time."
The draw put Liverpool into seventh place on the table but the fact they have recorded just 18 points in 11 matches is some cause for concern in regards to their Premiership chances.
