Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is planning a bid for AZ Alkmaar striker Moussa Dembele.
The Belgium international was watched by Wigan scouts last week against Arsenal in their Champions League defeat at the Emirates.
Martinez wants to boost his firepower in January and chairman Dave Whelan is willing to back him with funds big enough to land a player of Dembele's reputation.
He was out injured from October until December with a knee injury, but on his return he was hailed as being one of the players of the season in the Eredivisie after AZ's championship triumph.
