Palmer the latest target for Australian football elites

aussie know nothing about football and the a league is complete crap...most aussies wouldnt know who kanu is let alone robbie fowler...

Chris, there was only one real pundit at SBS that was 100% for South America which was th elate Johnn Warren. I have to say that I'd listen to his advice any time. As well, I still think Les Murray is the godfather of Australian football and if ou lisetn to him youd see he has always discussed an Australian football system which wa a mixture of South America and Europe.

Just remember these elties of SBS as you have described them are the heart and soul of Australian Football. If you think that Foxtel is the great saviour, have a look at the crwods and ask yourself the following qustion. Why has Foxsports this year imposed times on teams that do not produce the crowds. Plain and simple ratings. Their cash cow is the EPL and not the A League. As a roar supporter the start of the seaosn ticket proces really have impacted on our crowds but the other factor has been times when the games have started. PLaying a game at 5pm on a Sunday doe snot work. I think that the times for the games in Brisbane have been disasterous.

Clive Palmer and his managment team are as usless as the Roar's board when having proces that are just way over the top. Its only taken until round 14 to figure that out. Wow, smart guys.

Using it as a "backup" is OK Chris but the reason it has become a major issue is that newspapers in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth refuse to use the term football at all because they feel that somehow we are invading Aussie Rules Football territory. The term "football" is generic and should be used to describe all codes in their respective articles. It is not hard to call one sport Aussie Rules Football (or AFL as is done by many media outlets) and the other football but the editors of these papers have a vested interest in AFL and refuse to accept it. This, coupled with the countless "football-bashing" articles in these same papers leads people like myself to fight for the cause and protect our turf. I have lost count of how many such articles have been printed in the last 12 months.

Alex

Dont get hung up on soccer v football. Even in the home of football, the English have a number of high profile shows that refer to the game as soocer. Australians get prickly about the word soccer but is really is becoming the universal back up word to football.

Cheers

Chris, I agree with a lot of what you say. SBS analysts have been going on about bringing more South Americans to the A-League and were applauding Sydney FC and other clubs for bringing so many Brazilians including Juninho to Australia. The reasoning was that it would excite the crowds and bring the "huge" South American community out to the football. Well, I don't recall any huge increase in attendances for Sydney FC despite the fact that Juninho was a high profile Brazilian. Was anything said about the lack of increase in crowd numbers for Sydney, of course not.
They also tend to criticise the Australian game way too often.
I also have an issue with overseas football news getting priority ahead of A-League football on the SBS news. Nobody will convince me that there is a greater demand for Serie A news in Australia than A-League news. The local game should always be shown ahead of overseas leagues in my book.
Lastly, I'm one of these people who feel it's important that the game be referred to as football rather than soccer as is often done on this site (including this article). It's bad enough we can't get some of the mainstream papers to comply but to have to ask a "football" site such as this to call the game football is disappointing.

Thanks double H for taking the time to read the piece. I just think there's a lack of appreciation and recognition coming from the media for the people bankrolling the A-League during a particularly difficult time. We have guys like Palmer, Matheson now involved in the game, when their money could easily have been ploughed into NRL or AFL. And it could still happen if we keep rubbishing these guys.

I totally agree with your comments about the "advice" that comes from some so-called experts. Sure, it is helpful if you do have some ideas how the football game is played. In the long term, it is important that those who have spent their own money to build a club, also get a decent return on their investments. None of the "experts" have ever run a professional club, and hence their knowledge is worth little more than the middle finger in the air.
Clive Palmer has my admiration for building a good team. It is costing him a fortune, and he must have some input how his club is to be run. After all, he is not a billionaire by getting money from Centrelink!
