Liverpool's Mascherano stands by Argentina coach Maradona

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano insists Diego Maradona is the right man in charge of Argentina.

Mascherano's international coach is still feeling the heat despite Argentina's World Cup qualification.

There have been calls for Maradona's resignation as FIFA investigates his X-rated rant following that last-gasp 1-0 victory over Uruguay.

But Mascherano still believes Maradona, who had virtually no coaching experience when he was hired a year ago, should lead Argentina to the World Cup.

"Diego is a person living in football for more than 30 years and he knows how to manage a lot of things on the football pitch," Mascherano said.

"We know we have to improve for the World Cup but now we have time and we are really happy.

"And we are now a little bit relaxed because it was a difficult moment when we didn't know if we are going to the World Cup or not."
