USA demolish Cameroon 4-1 in U20 World Cup
USA last night defeated Cameroon 4-1 in the FIFA U20 World Cup at Mubarak Stadium in Egypt.
Thomas Rongen’s team was coming off a disappointing loss to Germany in their opening match but bounced back in the best possible fashion thanks to goals from Hertha Berlin’s Bryan Arguez, Jacksonville University’s Tony Taylor, Rutgers’ Dilly Duka and Virginia’s Brian Ownby.
Rongen was delighted with how his players responded following the loss.
“If you win 4-1 you’re clearly happy, but I’m more happy about the fact that our team responded well to a disappointing opening game against Germany,” he said.
“It showed some great character and resilience to manage this game, and it was a huge game for us.
“We felt we needed three points to get ourselves back in the race for the group, and we did that.
“I’m very proud of the way that the team handled the loss against Germany and focused our energy on Cameroon. We made a few changes that helped us and that was a result that we desperately needed.”
USA next take on Korea and a win will put them into the second round.
“Our next game against Korea is the only focus for us at this point and this group is fairly wide open,” Rongen added.
“We just have to look at the game on Friday and get ourselves in a position to get to the second round. That was our first goal, advancing out of group play and then taking every game as it comes.”
