Benitez leaves Birmingham on compassionate grounds
Birmingham have confirmed that Christian Benitez has flown to Ecuador after his father was involved in a serious car accident.
The 23-year-old only joined the Midlands club over the summer.
Boss Alex McLeish told the club's official website: "We are aware of the bad news concerning Christian's father and had no hesitation in granting him permission to travel home.
"We are deeply concerned for his father's welfare but understand that his injuries are not as serious as first thought and we send him our blessings and wish him a speedy recovery.
"There is a doubt as to whether Christian will be back in time for our fixture against Burnley on Saturday.
"He has settled in well and has already shown that he is a key figure for us, but we understand his desire to be with his family at this time.
"Furthermore he was already due to meet up with the Ecuadorian national side next week for their World Cup qualifying games."
