Everton defender Distin: Portsmouth situation heartbreaking

Everton defender Sylvain Distin says he's heart broken over the way former club Portsmouth has slipped.

He told the Daily Mail: "It breaks my heart to see what has happened there. I care deeply about Portsmouth and I just feel immensely sad to think how far they have fallen since we were lifting the FA Cup and challenging for a top-six finish in the league.

"I wanted to spend the rest of my career there. But then Harry went and that was the first big shock for everyone. Some of the lads only found out when they walked into the dressing room an hour or so before kick-off.

"There were so many questions and nearly all of them started with “Why?” We didn’t get many answers.

"We were losing every week and seeing our best players disappear one by one. The money had gone, the chairman had gone and so had the manager. It all happened so quickly.

"We were kept in the dark throughout and it was very frustrating. I gave them every chance to sort it out. While others left, I stayed. Even a week before the latest transfer deadline I was still convinced the ownership issue would be resolved, new signings would be made and I would remain a Pompey player.

"As it got closer I began to think, 'Wow, it’s not going to happen'. We were going to continue going backwards and suddenly I had to start thinking of myself. I had to leave and the Everton move happened very quickly."
