Canberra and Queensland book place in Westfield W-League Grand Final
The inaugural Westfield W-League Grand Final clash is set after Canberra United and Queensland Roar progressed through from the semi-finals.
Finishing in third position on the table, Canberra had to come up against second-placed Newcastle Jets away but left with a Grand Final berth after their 1-0 win.
Kara Mowbray’s 25th minute goal was enough for the visitors to go through to next Saturday’s decider where they will meet league leaders the Queensland Roar.
The Roar were at home to fourth-placed Sydney FC and went ahead in the 29th minute thanks to Tameka Butt but the Sky Blues pegged the deficit back 20 minutes from time through Linda O’Neill.
At full-time the scores were still tied and the scoreline remained the same after extra-time so a penalty shootout was required.
It was fitting that the Roar went through 5-4 on penalties as they have been the dominant side all season and deserve their chance in the Grand Final.
