Newcastle move to trump Sunderland for Arsenal defender Campbell
Newcastle United are aiming to trump Northeast rivals Sunderland for off contract Arsenal defender Sol Campbell.
The Daily Express says Campbell, 35, who was married at the weekend and will not be back from his honeymoon until a week tomorrow, has had talks with the newly promoted club.
Manager Chris Hughton and central defender Campbell worked together for a spell at Spurs and Newcastle see him as being pivotal in their return to the top-flight and may even offer him the captain’s armband. Campbell has also been offered a two-year £35,000-a-week deal by Celtic and had talks with Sunderland boss Steve Bruce.
“They were very positive,” said Bruce. “I hope to hear from him soon.”
Campbell will set up home in the North-east with his heiress bride Fiona and that could sway his mind about his future.
