Newcastle keeper Harper: Championship games as big as any Champions League tie

Steve Harper is delighted he chose to stay with Newcastle United for this season's Championship campaign.

Currently enjoying his best ever run of games at St James' Park, like the hard-core fans, he can even remember glorious European occasions, back in the days when games against the likes of Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus were taken for granted.

"The Juventus game stands out for me," he told the Daily Mail. "I didn't play at Blackburn on the Saturday and was then told by Sir Bobby in his own inimitable way that I would be playing against Juventus in the Champions League.

"It was certainly a big change from an evening at Kingston Park with the reserves. It probably seems longer ago than it actually was.

"Now I relish the Championship games just as much as those memorable nights under the bright lights of the Champions League. When you haven't played football in a long time you realise just how much you have missed it."
