Newcastle hero Carroll: I could have joined Sunderland

Newcastle United hero Andy Carroll admits he grew up idolising Alan Shearer - though had family pressure to play more like Sunderland legend Niall Quinn!

Carroll's game has come on leaps and bounds in the last 18 months.

He said: “As a kid, I was training at Newcastle on a Tuesday and Sunderland on a Thursday and, at the end of the season, I had to pick one. My mum’s side are all Sunderland so I was getting plenty of stick off them but it was always Newcastle for me.

“Like everyone else, Shearer was the one I modelled myself on and I had my own No.9 shirt with his name on the back.

“Mind you, my Nan wanted me to be the new Niall Quinn.”
