Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat is happy where the team is currently placed although he knows home form has to improve.

The reigning champions have struggled at Etihad Stadium this season which has been a fortress for them in the past, experiencing two heavy defeats (to Sydney FC and Central Coast) along the way.

But despite these aberrations in front of home fans, Muscat believes the Victory are in a strong position to mount another title challenge.

"(Those losses) still hurt," Muscat said.

"It was embarrassing and we're not going to shy away from that.

"But we're pretty comfortable with where we're at. Overall, we've got to be pretty happy. We've still got a great opportunity to go on and win another championship."

Melbourne are currently second on the A-League table but have conceded a high number of goals compared to successful seasons of the past and Muscat knows that is the main area of improvement.

"(Conceding 22 goals) sits right up there with not winning games at home," Muscat added.

"We're conceding goals and no one dislikes conceding goals more than me.

"But the way we play, it's no coincidence we're leading the competition in scoring (22 goals). But we still have to tighten up.

"We were conceding from set pieces and we sorted that out. But if we're really serious about doing something this season, we can't concede another 22 goals in the next 13 games."
