Melbourne Victory’s Vargas frustrated with poor defending
Melbourne Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas admits he is frustrated with how the team has defended so far this season.
The Victory again conceded ‘soft’ goals against Central Coast Mariners in their 2-0 loss on Friday night and Vargas is keen to fix the leaky area as soon as possible.
"It's been pretty frustrating," Vargas said yesterday.
"There's been occasions where (goalkeeper Michael Petkovic has) had not much to do and we're still conceding goals.
"We've got to fix it and fix it quickly because teams are taking a look at that and trying to hit us on the set pieces."
The Victory now have a record of one win, two draws and two losses from their opening five matches and find themselves sitting 7th on the league table.
Vargas is aware of the importance that each player has to do their job for the team to come together and produce positive results.
“A lot of times it comes down to the individual doing his job," Vargas added.
"It's a mental thing for me. It's about having a job and marking someone and not letting him get the ball before you. We're just slackening off in that area and it's been pretty costly."
