Melbourne Victory’s Leijer expecting ‘friendly’ rivalry with Heart

Melbourne Victory defender Adrian Leijer is expecting a strong but friendly rivalry against new club Melbourne Heart this season.

The 24-year old knows that it is great for football to have a solid rivalry in Melbourne – Australia’s premier sporting city – but does not expect things to get out of hand from a supporters viewpoint.

"Those days of bitter rivalries have passed, I think," Leijer told the Herald Sun. "You see the rivalries in the AFL and they're massive rivalries, but it's friendly fire.

“It will be a big rivalry and an intense rivalry and some of the games will be the most intense Australian football has ever seen, but off the park hopefully it's a friendly rivalry between the two clubs."

The first Melbourne derby is on October 2, week nine of the 2010/11 A-League season, and Leijer is really looking forward to the encounter.

“I can't wait for the derby. That's going to be massive. It's a good thing for Melbourne. To get the interest in football it probably takes two teams to really get talking about it," he said.
