Melbourne Heart head coach Joan van ‘t Schip accepts the new A-League franchise may experience a slow start in their debut season.

The Dutchman understands that his squad have only been together as a whole for about three weeks and with nine days before their first match for Premiership points, patience may be the key for the Heart.

“That's how it is," van 't Schip said.

"It may take a little bit longer for the group to understand what direction we want to go. But even with all of those things together I am very confident and very happy with the way we have trained and the last few games we have played.

“Of course we want to have a good start to the season. If you win that helps in believing what you are doing.

"But for us the main thing is to work on the system, talk about it and understand what we have to do together.

"We also have to learn about each other on the pitch, what the qualities of each player are."

The Heart take on the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League opener, next Thursday August 5 at AAMI Park – kick-off is at 7:30pm AEST.
