Melbourne Victory beat Sydney FC in all areas other than the scoreboard in the blockbuster A-League clash on Saturday night.

The Victory had hoped to win against it's biggest A-League rival to give captain Kevin Muscat an ideal present to celebrate his 500th club appearance in Australian domestic football.

And whilst it dominated an under-strength Sydney, who were without defender Simon Colosimo, Melbourne was unable to capitalise on numerous scoring opportunities.

Archie Thompson could have opened the floodgates for Melbourne in the opening minutes, but the crossbar denied his close range shot.

The result maintains Melbourne's three point lead over Sydney at the top of the A-League table.
