Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick didn’t care how, he just wanted three points against North Queensland Fury.

The defending champions took just one point from their opening two games, leaking in five goals in the process and round 3 was all about getting a win according to Merrick.

"We're happy to get the points and do it ugly," Merrick said yesterday.

"It takes two teams to play an open game with fluent football.

"If you're serious, as defending champions, about having a real go, you've got to win games.

"Collecting three points as often as possible is vital. If you lose two or three games in a 27-game league, it's not right to say you're out of the race.

"But to be serious, you've got to win on a regular basis."
