Melbourne coach Merrick hopes to use Broxham long-term

Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick is hoping to sign Leigh Broxham to a long-term deal.

The championship-winning tactician believes the 21-year old will only become a better player, especially after missing out on the Victory’s title last season, and hopes he can sign him to a new deal, even before his contract expires.

“I would say he will be in the starting 11 and, regarding proving himself, we are very keen to re-sign him for the long term I will tell you that now,’’ Merrick said.

“I would have signed him long-term last season. Sometimes for a youngster missing out is a good thing because you know when you get your chance you are not going to let it go, and I get that feeling with Leigh.”

Broxham said he would like to wait and see just how things are going before committing to any lengthy deal.

“I will address things in a couple of months if they are not going well. If I am playing I am happy,” he said.

“If you have two seasons at the club and you haven’t played then I think anyone in that situation would explore other avenues, probably in Australia still. At my age I just need to be playing games.”
