Melbourne’s Hernandez in doubt for Nth Qld clash

Melbourne Victory midfielder Carlos Hernandez is in doubt for Sunday’s clash in Townsville with North Queensland Fury.

Melbourne Victory midfielder Carlos Hernandez is in doubt for Sunday’s clash in Townsville with North Queensland Fury.

The Costa Rican, arguably the Victory’s best player this season, suffered an ankle injury on December 12 when his side defeated the Central Coast Mariners away and it has since flared up leaving him struggling to get up for the Fury fixture.

“There's a good chance Carlos will be unavailable," Victory coach Ernie Merrick said yesterday.

"He got a knock on the same ankle and it's swollen up so it's 70-30 against him playing. We're pretty sure he won't be available."

It is a blow to the Victory but not as bad as it could have been a few weeks ago when fellow attacking midfielders Nick Ward and Tom Pondeljak were sidelined.

The Victory now find themselves equal top on the table after Sydney FC won their midweek Round 19 match last night but the Melburnians have a game in hand.
