Manchester United made an attempt to land Adam Johnson ahead of his move to Manchester City, it has been revealed.
The Daily Star Sunday says United made a secret move for the England Under-21 winger, who signed for City last Monday in a £7million deal.
Johnson, 22, had talks at Old Trafford with chief executive David Gill and was given a tour of the stadium.
But, owing to his mother’s illness, Johnson wasn’t ready to commit himself to a move from Middlesbrough and Sir Alex Ferguson then cooled his interest on a deal.
