Manchester United hope Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor is banned for this Sunday’s derby.

United believes that the treatment handed to veteran Paul Scholes against Tottenham on the weekend falls into insignificance as opposed to incidents involving Adebayor from City’s clash with Arsenal.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes that the decision to send Scholes off after a second bookable offence was harsh but was coy when asked for a comment in regards to the differential treatment his team were handed.

"I am not getting into whether or not a player should have been sent off,” Ferguson said.

"Inconsistency and decision-making is part of the game, what makes it interesting."

Adebayor faces up to six matches on the sidelines after stomping on the face of Robin van Persie and then inciting the Arsenal fans after he sprinted to the other end of the pitch following his goal.
