Man Utd boss Ferguson: Foster can use Schmeichel as inspiration

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has no doubts over Ben Foster stepping in for the injured Edwin van der Sar.

“He signed a four-year contract and that shows that he’s confident about what his future is like here,” said Ferguson. “He’s 26 now but we didn’t sign [Peter] Schmeichel until he was 26, so his career is just starting.

“I’ve had to assure him but the thing that’s disrupted him is he’s had a couple of injuries. He’s had two cruciate [knee] injuries in his career and he broke his hand and got ligament damage in his hand last season. Our two young goalkeepers [Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak] have also been faced with what I think is the best goalkeeper in Europe in Van der Sar and that’s what makes it difficult for Ben and Tomasz.”

Ferguson added: “With the ball at his feet, Ben is a different class. He can chip them with either foot and he’s got great length with his kicking.”
