Man Utd boss Ferguson: England U21 debut had one player demanding new deal

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed how one of his players sought a new contract after winning his first England U21 call.

Ferguson gave his agent short shrift, but admits the landscape is changing in football.

He said: "It's a new way. I had an agent phone me up about a young boy of ours who had played in the England Under-21s.

"The agent said 'I think it's time we sat down and talked about a new contract'.

"He'd played for England once but, in this agent's mind, that demanded a new contract.

"I told him we'd see how he plays for Manchester United first but that's the way of the world now.
