Man City’s Mancini praises out-of-favour Given

Manchester City has lauded goalkeeper Shay Given for his performance in the 2-1 Carling Cup loss to West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday night.

The Republic of Ireland international was given a rare start by the Italian and performed well at The Hawthorns, prompting Mancini to lay praise although it looks very unlikely he will be placed in front of Joe Hart for any fixtures of higher magnitude.

"Shay Given played very well," said Mancini. "I am very happy for him.

"He deserved a night like this. He is still a very good keeper.”

Given will return to the subs bench when City tackles league leaders Chelsea at Eastlands on Saturday.
