Liverpool new boy Milan Jovanovic has revealed he turned down offers from big European clubs and is now ready to become a star in England.

The 29-year old Serbian striker says he has not joined Liverpool from Standard Liege just to be a member of the squad but is intent on becoming an Anfield icon, explaining his decision to turn down the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid.

“I turned down Real Madrid 18 months ago, when Predrag Mijatovic was the sporting director. I think 99 per cent of people said they did not understand why I did it," he said.

"If Real call, they say you have to go. But maybe I am special. I thought if I went there it would be as an ordinary player, but if I stayed in Belgium, where I felt good, then I was a star.

"I have no regrets. I turned them down because I didn't want to be on the fringes. I will never go somewhere where I only get to play a small part.

"I want to be happy somewhere, I want to be part of the team, and I am only looking forward to playing with Liverpool."
