Liverpool management delighted with Coady, Wisdom progress

Liverpool chiefs are proud of their England U17 Euro winners Conor Coady and Andre Wisdom.

Both youngsters have been pivotal performers for coach John McMahon's side in pre-season so far and their partnership at the back has pleased the reserve team boss.

"It was fantastic for Conor and Andre to play so well for England in the summer and they are a credit to themselves as well as this club," McMahon told liverpoolfc.tv.

"It shows how much good work has gone on at the Academy under Frank McParland, Pep Segura and Rodolfo Borrell and a lot of credit goes to them to coaching these players.

"Conor and Andre are new to the reserve squad this season but they are brilliant to have around. Their attitude is first class, they are winners, they want to learn and they are characters. They both want to be professional footballers with Liverpool."

A couple of things that baffle me here.

Firstly why is credit being heaped upon the new regime at Liverpool's Academy for boys in the under 18 set up when they have been at the club well before the present overseers of the set up in place. It's not as if either player has developed beyond what you would expect as normal age related improvement over the last twelve months.

I think Wisdom can be a player but why is Coady's performances being praised so highly? When Eric Cantona coined the "water carrier" term to describe a functional footballer he may well have been watching Coady.

Let's be honest here his performances for England were less than inspiring and it was a traversty that he kept the much more complete Thorn of West Brom out of the starting line up.

This reflects a problem we have certainly at England under 16/17 levels where Kenny Swaine tends to select on the basis of "respected" academies. He is the offspring of Dario Gradi after all.
