Liverpool defender Carragher: Ever more difficult for local lads to breakthrough

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says it's becoming ever more difficult for local lads to make it at Anfield.

This season has seen the likes of defenders Stephen Darby, 21, and Martin Kelly, 19, handed their full first team debuts having both come through the academy.

However, Carragher thinks the career path followed by himself and captain Steven Gerrard is becoming more and more unlikely.

"I think it's more difficult to come through the ranks now than when I was a youngster," the Liverpool vice-captain told the Liverpool Daily Post.

"There are a lot more foreign players at the club, and now with the level the team is at, basically if they want to come through then they have to be ready to play Champions League football.

"That shows how difficult it is."

Champions league football??? You'll be lucky if you're playing in the Europa league. The problem of youths breaking into their 1st team is apparent at Chelsea, Liverpool and now Man city. Something must be done about the reserve league as playing 18 game a whole year is not enough. Atleast the league cup must be turned into a under 21 event for all premier league clubs along with a comprehensive league devided into N,S,E & W zones for the reserves. If nothing is done soon, the future of english talents will hit a wall.
