Joe Cole: Chelsea must win final five games in 2009
The Blues added a midweek 2-2 draw against lowly APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League to their Carling Cup loss to Blackburn and Premier League loss to Manchester City to their recent poor performance record and Cole knows the importance of getting themselves out of this slump prior to the new year.
"It has been a bit of a bumpy week and we need to bounce back at the weekend now and get back to winning ways,” he said.
"The next five league games are very important - the build-up to Christmas is always a very important period, and Christmas as well.
"If we can get to the top of the year still sitting at the top of the league then we would be very happy.”
The Blues face Everton at home this week before they host Portsmouth and then take on West Ham in one of two London derbies left in 2009. Following that clash they take on Birmingham away before hosting another London rival in Fulham.
Cole is well aware that any game in the league is tough, regardless of who the opponent is.
"Every team in the league is difficult to play against,” he added.
"There are no excuses though. We are at the top of the table now and hopefully will be there on January 1."
