Italy coach Marcello Lippi admits Roma's title surge has surprised him.

Roma are now just a point away from leaders Inter Milan after Saturday's shock win.

Lippi told GR Parlamento: “We need to get on our feet and applaud Roma for what this group of players is doing: from the President to the directors, the Coach and the players.

“It was already a lot for Ranieri to set their season straight. That was the most they could have asked of him.

“What Roma are doing, with their Coach and their players, is in front of everyone's eyes. Now there is great enthusiasm in the atmosphere. Everyone is ready to help: the great teams do it like this.

“In one period Inter were the best, then Milan and now Roma. And they are collecting all the three points.

“In our game, it's enough to soften just for a moment and there is someone there to profit.

“It's wonderful that there are doubts until the end.”
