Italian Football Federation chief Giancarlo Abete admits he was disappointed with Paolo Maldini's controversial send-off by AC Milan fans on Sunday.

After a 3-2 defeat to Roma, a small section of fans jeered and heckled with banners against Maldini and the directors.

“It was a shameful incident because Maldini deserves respect for what he is and has been,” Abete said in La Repubblica.

“It was something with no logic and it is impossible to understand. Anyway, we are planning to honour him with a friendly match.”
