Hull City legend Dean Windass has climbed down from his call that manager Phil Brown be axed this week.

Earlier in the week, Windass declared Brown should make way after a disappointing start to the season.

But yesterday, he insisted on TalkSport: “Sometimes the players have to take responsibility. The managers always get it in the neck when performances don’t go the right way and players have got to come out and say, ‘well, we haven’t played well, we’ve let Phil down’ and I’m one of a whole lot of people who are very frustrated.

"I don’t want Phil to lose his job, I don’t want anybody to lose a job in a factory or in the football industry. I’m telling you, he is a very, very good manager. I worked with him for two-and-a-half years and learnt a hell of a lot.

"He’s very good tactically, he’s very good on the training ground, he’s very, very enjoyable but all I said was that if results don’t go the (right) way, supporters get frustrated and you might need a change.”
