Holman’s AZ Alkmaar survive scare to qualify for Europa League

Australian midfielder Brett Holman and his Dutch club, AZ Alkmaar, survived a scare from Kazakhstani club Aktobe Lento to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.

Australian midfielder Brett Holman and his Dutch club, AZ Alkmaar, survived a scare from Kazakhstani club Aktobe Lento to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.

Alkmaar took a 2-0 lead into the second leg, played at Tcentralny Stadium in Aktobe, and managed to a goal up early in the piece when Pontus Wrenbloom netted in the 9th minute.

It looked done and dusted for AZ until Aktobe hit back twice through Murat Tleshev, making it 2-1 to the home side on the night but 3-2 on aggregate to the Dutch club.

Fortunately for Holman, who played 86 minutes, his side held on and booked their spot in the initial phase of Europe’s second tier club competition.
