Gold Coast United fearing Smeltz may leave
Following a solid performance with the New Zealand national team at the World Cup where he scored against defending champions Italy, the two-time A-League leading goalscorer is attracting plenty of attention and Bleiberg just hopes that these enquiries do not become official otherwise his main man will be off.
“Shane is negotiating with several clubs and there is every possibility he could leave and if that is the case we would wish him well," he told goldcoast.com.au.
"He's been great for us but he has a clause in his contract which guarantees a release and the club has never sought to force him to stay if he wants to further his career elsewhere.
"From my perspective it's an uneasy situation because we don't know whether he is coming or going and if he leaves, I need to find a replacement.
“Nothing concrete has come in yet and we'll assess it when and if it happens," he added.
"It's obviously best for us if things are sorted out ... and of course we want to hold on to him because he's a born goalscorer which no A-League club would want to lose."
