Gold Coast United’s Smeltz free to take on Brisbane Roar
The two-time A-League Golden Boot winner has been cleared to take part in the season opener despite signing a contract with Chinese club Shandong Luneng last month.
After travelling to China, Smeltz decided to return home and renege on the deal and it was uncertain whether or not he would be able to return to the A-League straight away.
But United coach Miron Bleiberg confirmed his star man would be on the pitch at Skilled Park on Sunday.
"He's going to play, my favourite son," he said.
"Like every father you are happy to see your favourite son back.
"Sometimes he treats us as a bus station and he comes and goes whenever he feels like it but we forgive him."
