Gold Coast coach Bleiberg: Palmer set up a culture for us

Gold Coast United coach Miron Bleiberg believes owner Clive Palmer set up a winning culture for the club when he predicted the new A-League club would go through the season undefeated.

Although that did not happen, Bleiberg, who guided the team to a third-placed finish, says Palmer’s faith and belief rubbed off on the players and he was also very frustrated that certain sections of the media did not recognise a successful season for United.

"In between the congratulations about making the finals in our first season I was reminded at every opportunity that Clive's prediction did not come true," Bleiberg said.

"There were some sarcastic smiles when it was raised. Some people do not have the depth of thinking and do not understand the importance of what Clive Palmer said.

"Clive is a smart man and when he announced we would win every game he actually set up a tradition for this club," he addd.

"Throughout the world there are the underdog clubs. They celebrate every win and even draws, like it was their last.

"Then there are the superstar clubs, Manchester United, Barcelona and the other giants. They have the mentality to go out thinking they can win every game.

"As a new club we had a choice to go one way or the other. When Clive declared we would not lose a match he set the standard.

"Every time we go out for a game of football, we take with us the belief we can win."
