Fulham's Gera: I almost quit game for booze

Fulham midfielder Zoltan Gera has revealed he gave up football as a teenager - for booze and pills!

Gera, now 30, admits: "I had a bad period of my life a long time ago - more than 15 years ago, now.

"If I had not found God I could have been a good for nothing drug addict ... or maybe even dead.

"I even quit playing football for four or five years. I started playing again at 16 because my life had changed.

"When I was younger I was in a gang and I was smoking, drinking and doing drugs. Not hard drugs but it was still very bad for me.

"I used to be in the casino all the time. Normally you shouldn't be in the casino until you were 18, but I had a small gate that I used to get in by.

"When I think about these things I'm happy because I changed. I know how these things can break and ruin your life so I have no desire to go back to what I was."
